A US county has adopted a new emergency notification system which uses VoIP solutions, it has been reported.

The new technology will alert residents in Oregon-based Clackamas County to any local emergencies via VoIP, landline or mobile calls and e-mails, reports molallapioneer.com.

Emergency management officials will be able to tell citizens of critical situations which affect the populace, such as a natural disaster.

Bob Austin, county commissioner, said: "This is a great new program that enables us to reach a large number of people over a short period of time, which is critical in an emergency

"It costs nothing to sign up. I encourage every resident of Clackamas County to take advantage of this technology to protect their families, their homes and businesses."

Technology firm 21st Century Communications installed the system, which went live yesterday (September 1st).
