VoIP solutions could soon be accessible underground following the release of a new wireless router access point (WRAP).

Becker Electronics has launched its Becker WRAP system which enables users to access the internet via Wi-Fi, reports instrumentation.co.za.

The new hardware could be used in mines to enable workers to communicate with each other via IP telephony solutions.

Albert Bower, managing director of Becker Electronics, claimed the firm has invested significant time in ensuring the technology works underground.

He told the news provider: "A feature of this system is its intrinsically safe design which enables safe use in hazardous mining conditions underground.

"What is important about Becker's systems is that each product can be installed as a single standalone system, or can be deployed using a phased approach to minimise initial capital outlay."

The technology is currently being used at the Illwara Coal Mine in Australia and has also been tested in various mines in the US, Russia, Poland, Germany and South Africa.

Now I can see why so many companies are using IP telephony hardware, so that they can cut cost and be more efficient in communications!
