Mobile VoIP services set to 'expand'

The mobile VoIP solutions industry is set to expand as more firms begin to offer data-only services, it has been claimed.

The majority of VoIP uses currently select a traditional calling plan in addition to a data package which allows them to make VoIP calls.

Currently, few firms allow customers to opt for a data-only plan but Anton Wahlman, a former telecommunications analyst, claimed this service will help the sector expand.

Mr Wahlman expressed his belief that Clearwire, a company which provides data-only mobile broadband technology, will profit from the evolving industry.

He wrote on thestreet.com: "Its network has the lowest latency - critical for VoIP to work well - and offers the most capacity for VoIP.

"As all other cellular network providers see their revenue fall by two-third over time, Clearwire's revenue should mushroom dramatically."

US IP telephony solutions provider AT&T offers its customers a data package for a maximum of $25 (£16) a month.
