Firms should 'protect' their voice gateway for secure VoIP solutions

Consumers have been urged to protect their voice gateway to ensure their VoIP service is secure.

Chris Jackson, writing for networkworld.com, claimed hackers are constantly attempting to profit from accessing users' VoIP solutions.

He said: "Criminals already realise the economic viability of stealing voice services through the internet. They can resell VoIP services, make expensive calls, and conduct voice phishing attacks against a businesses customers.

"Protecting your voice gateway is extremely important for preventing toll fraud and other criminal activities that can be conducted through your VoIP system."

For customers who use a router as their gateway, Mr Jackson advised users to disable unneeded services and deploy a firewall to block unauthorised access.

Call logs should also be reviewed on a regular basis to identify malicious behaviour before it becomes problematic.

Furthermore, a security audit can test the system to ensure it is not susceptible to attack, he added.
