Free VoIP services are not secure as they do not offer adequate support and tools to ensure they can not be hacked, it has been claimed.

Many companies offer free IP telephony solutions but one expert has urged firms to select a VoIP service which offers comprehensive assistance.

Vlad Ellis, chief executive at Speedflow Communications, expressed his belief that companies may suffer from using unsecured technology.

He told tmcnet.com: "With free software products there is always the fear of them being easily hacked.

"Unfortunately, tempted by the system availability, many VoIP companies suffer from significant financial losses by going this route and often end in business closure."

Mr Ellis added that licensed software products offer comprehensive developer support and further product enhancements which can help the long-term development of a company.

Small and medium-sized enterprises could also consider outsourcing IT support to specialists to help boost security.
