VoIP traffic could be set to rise following reports which claim Google is set to launch a web-based VoIP service.

Technology website cnet.com has revealed that the search engine giant is currently testing an internet service which will allow Gmail users to make calls from their inbox.

Customers can launch the application via the Google Chat window and can access IP telephony solutions to call any of their contacts.

VoIP traffic could rise as more users could easily access the technology without having to actively download any software or purchase new hardware.

A Google representative refused to confirm or deny the rumours. They told the news provider: "Google is always testing new features and products, but we have nothing specific to announce right now,"

According to cnet.com, the interface is similar to the one used for Google Voice – an application which transcribes voice mails and consolidates multiple numbers into a single one.
