A new application has been launched which allows Blackberry users to make VoIP calls via Wi-Fi.

Blackberry customers were previously unable to use mobile VoIP solutions without using call minutes while Wi-Fi calls were common on other platforms such as Android and the iPhone.

However, Indian firm Tring Me has now released the first third-party VoIP software with Wi-Fi capability.

Yusuf Motiwala, Tring Me's founder and chief executive, claimed firms of all sizes can save costs by using Wi-Fi to make calls.

He told zdnet.co.uk: "Employees worldwide can call each other over Wi-Fi (which is becoming ubiquitous) at no additional cost thereby tremendously reducing the call costs for the same calls over traditional cellular network - a big saving for enterprise of any size."

The application will be available on BlackBerry handsets which run on operating systems 4.2 to 5.0.
