VoIP service users should regularly monitor and improve their data network to maintain high call quality, it has been claimed.

Voice data has to compete with any other network traffic and a congested system can often have a detrimental effect on the standard of IP telephony solutions.

Patrick Barnard, writing for tmcnet.com, expressed his belief that VoIP customers should routinely check their network performance.

He said: "Keeping VoIP communications running smoothly on any area network requires continuous monitoring and 'tuning' because the demands on the network are continuously changing as your business evolves."

Mr Barnard added that companies should consider outsourcing network monitoring and troubleshooting services.

This can lower IT support costs, while a dedicated monitoring team can help to detect and prevent issues before they occur.
