VoIP traffic will rise over the next four years following the continued roll out of broadband services, according to new research.

Market research firm Dell'Oro Group has revealed that the VoIP solutions market will record a compound annual growth rate of 27 per cent between 2009 and 2014.

The company expects government initiatives to aid the expansion of broadband and predicts 309 million consumers will use VoIP via super-fast internet connections in 2014.

Greg Collins, vice-president of Dell'Oro Group, claimed the market will benefit from next-generation broadband.

He said: "The expected increase in voice over broadband subscribers, combined with the need of those subscribers to communicate with legacy circuit-switched voice services subscribers, will drive a modest increase in media gateway channel shipments."

BT is currently expanding its broadband services across the UK and plans to connect around 18 million British households and businesses to its network by next year.
