VoIP solutions in the North West could be set to profit from the roll out of BT's broadband service.

The telecommunications giant is set to connect a further 140,000 homes and businesses in the region to its next-generation internet network by Spring 2011.

Residents in Penrith, Middlewich, Marshalls Cross and Kirkham will all be able to access download speeds of 20Mbps using the firm's 21st Century Network technology.

The move could increase the standard of IP telephony solutions as faster download speeds can improve the audio quality of calls.

Mike Blackburn, BT's North West regional director, claimed the development highlight's the company's commitment to the North West.

He said: "It will help ensure that businesses and households in the region are in a strong position to thrive. Faster broadband can help businesses become more competitive and greatly improve the on-line services available to households."

Following the expansion of the network next year, around 18 million British households and businesses will have been upgraded to the service.
