The Apple iPad provides good quality VoIP solutions, it has been claimed.

The tablet can be used as a VoIP phone if customers download the required software and make calls using the built-in microphone and speakers.

Furthermore, a voice headset can also be attached to the device via the camera connection kit which features one USB port. An iPad user can then access IP telephony solutions via a Wi-Fi connection.

Gerry Blackwell, writing for voipplanet.com, trialled a number of different VoIP services and was full of praise for the audio quality during calls.

He said: "Given that one of the iPad's primary applications is music play-back, it's not surprising that audio quality, at least at the iPad end, was quite good. It was good across all the services we tried."

Following its release in April, Apple had sold three million iPad's by the end of June and is estimated to have now sold around four million units.

The firm is planning to launch a smaller version of the device, called the iPad mini, in time for Christmas.
