VoIP solutions in Lincolnshire could benefit from the roll-out of fibre-optic broadband.

Internet service provider Nextgenus UK CIC and technology firm AFL Telecommunications have begun to deploy their 100Mbps network in the rural village of Ashby de la Launde.

Residents could see an improvement in the standard of IP telephony solutions as faster internet access can boost call quality.

The firms have completed the preliminary work but, in an effort to save costs, households and businesses who wish to connect to the service must dig into the network themselves. Around 60 homes and three companies have already started the process.

Guy Jarvis, chief executive of Nextgenus UK CIC, claimed rural areas are often overlooked when large firms plan their super-fast broadband network.

He said: "Unlike urban areas which represent a commercially viable investment to large telecommunications companies, the rural communities in 'notspot and 'slowspot' areas with fewer subscribers won't receive the same level of investment."

The project is expected to be completed by the end of September.
