Over a quarter of US telecommunications users are planning to switch to VoIP solutions over the next 12 months, according to new research.

Telecommunications consultancy firm Atlantic-ACM has revealed that 27 per cent of respondents are intending or have migrated to IP telephony solutions.

The majority of those moving to VoIP are currently using integrated access/PRI communications - which transfer multiple data streams simultaneously - and circuit-switched voice systems.

Dr Judy Reed Smith, chief executive of Atlantic-ACM, claimed demand for VoIP services remained strong.

She said: "Atlantic-ACM forecasts indicate that VoIP will continue to experience high growth in the future as VoIP products become increasingly commoditised and end users pursue gains in cost and efficiency."

The company's Business Connectivity Wireline and Wireless Report Card surveys small and medium-sized businesses, enterprise customers and wireless subscribers.

Around 5,000 individuals took part in the research.
