A US university has decided to upgrade its old phone system with the introduction of VoIP solutions.

Washington State University will deploy the technology throughout its campuses and offices in a bid to cut costs and improve call reliability.

Officials claim the new technology will simplify the billing process throughout the institution as the majority of VoIP costs will be integrated with internet bills.

A statement from the university highlighted the benefits of IP telephony solutions.

It said: "These systems allow for improved voice quality, many new features, and easier management of telephone moves, adds and changes.

"Once we have the new system fully operational there are additional capabilities which can be added to enhance unified messaging, mobility and other new capabilities."

The university was able to fund the installation of VoIP as it saved a significant amount of money on energy costs during the previous year.

The project is expected to be completed by 2012.
