US VoIP traffic has grown following the introduction of a promotional offer by a Seattle-based firm.

Speakeasy has seen its customer base increase by 40 per cent after they started offering new customers free VoIP phones.

Small firms have been particularly keen to adopt the technology as the offer allows companies to deploy IP telephony solutions without any start-up costs.

Mike Garrity, chief operating officer at The Rofo Group, expressed his belief that call quality has also improved following his switch to the company's VoIP service.

He said: "With the free phones offer, there were no up-front costs at all. Speakeasy provides an end-to-end solution including broadband, so they were able to guarantee the call quality we couldn't get with our previous provider."

New business customers receive a free Polycom SoundPoint IP 321 VoIP-enabled phone if they purchase a specific plan and install a minimum of five lines.

The promotion was launched in March and is set to finish at the end of August.
