Mobile VoIP traffic could be set to rise following the release of a new mobile application.

VoX Communications has launched its VoIP application specifically for the Nokia N900 smartphone.

The move could lead to an increase in the number of people using IP telephony solutions as more people gain access to the technology.

Mark Richards, VoX's chief information officer, claimed the firm was eager to deliver the software to Nokia customers.

He said: "We have had extremely positive feedback on the experience of the Nokia N900, which has a look and feel similar to the high end smartphones that are currently in the market."

The service promises to offer cheaper international call rates than traditional mobile operators, with international customers able to call the US for just £0.01 per minute.

Nokia N900 users can download the package at the Ovi store.
