A British firm is set to launch a new satellite broadband service which could increase VoIP traffic.

Inmarsat will use three Boeing satellites to provide high-speed internet to planes and ships as part of the firm's new international service - Global Xpress network.

The satellites will form the new Inmarsat-5 constellation which will deliver broadband speeds of up to 50Mbps.

IP telephony solutions could profit from the move as consumers will be able to use VoIP services while travelling.

Andrew Sukawaty, Inmarsat chief executive, said: "This is a new investment for growth. With the Global Xpress network, we will be the first operator to offer global broadband coverage, offering unparalleled speeds and bandwidth to customers in remote locations around the world."

The new service will cost around £750 million to construct and is due to be operational in 2014.
