A new mobile phone application which allows users to call their Facebook friends for free could boost VoIP traffic.

Android and iPhone customers can use the Vonage software to make VoIP calls over 3G, 4G or Wi-Fi networks.

The new software could result in more consumers using mobile IP telephony solutions as more people have access to the technology.

Michael Tempora, senior vice president of programme management and strategic initiatives at Vonage, claimed users would benefit from the technology.

He said: "It's a paradigm changer for the consumer, and one that takes advantage of broadband networks. It's exciting for consumers and another step for us in using VoIP technology to deliver great value for consumers."

The application is also currently available to iPod touch users to make outbound calls, while later versions will be compatible with the iPad.

Meanwhile, Vonage recorded a $5.3 million (£3.3 million) increase in net income for the first quarter of 2010 compared to the same period last year.
