Firms should undertake a pre-network assessment before introducing VoIP solutions, it has been claimed.

Paul Wiggins, writing for technewsworld.com, advised companies to ascertain their network capacity to ensure it can provide high quality IP telephony solutions.

He said: "By conducting a pre-network assessment, IT managers can assess whether common converged network problems - such as jitter, latency, delay and packet loss - are likely to occur."

A pre-network assessment should show companies the current VoIP call capacity and quality based on the current set-up.

Mr Wiggins advised businesses to quickly isolate and address any network issues which can affect the standard of VoIP.

Furthermore, users could prioritise VoIP traffic over other data applications which use significant bandwidth to improve the standard of calls.

According to Mr Wiggins, any assessment should be taken over a sufficient period of time as "networks behave differently at various times of the day".
