VoIP traffic could increase as a result of the expansion of WiMax internet services.

Around 90 per cent of WiMax operators plan to offer IP telephony solutions over their networks by 2012, according to a new study by Infonetics Research.

Furthermore, the majority of respondents claimed they would also introduce mobile services within the next two years.

The extension of WiMax services could result in more consumers using mobile VoIP solutions as more people have access to the technology.

Richard Webb, directing analyst for WiMax, microwave and mobile devices at
Infonetics Research, claimed more mobile phones need to be WiMax-enabled.

He said: "The WiMax industry is up against the clock to address these challenges if it is to fulfil its undoubted potential as a long-term broadband technology."

WiMax is a specific type of broadband technology which is designed for fixed or 'nomadic' services – where a user regularly has to re-locate and quickly access a web connection.
