British small and medium-sized enterprises will need a better broadband network if they are to compete with those in other countries around the world.

That is according to technology expert Shane Richmond, who wrote in the Telegraph that broadband has become as essential to both businesses and consumers as other utilities such as gas.

From emails and internet access to VoIP solutions, a growing number of company operations are becoming dependent on the nation's broadband infrastructure.

Mr Richmond wrote: "High-speed broadband is rapidly becoming as basic and essential a service as the provision of water or electricity.

"It isn't just about providing access to time-wasting social media sites – it's about ensuring that Britons can run their businesses, do their shopping and access the latest news and local information."

The government intends to have installed the "best broadband network in Europe" – in the words of culture secretary Jeremy Hunt – by the end of this parliament.

It will have some way to go to reach this target and is still working on the Broadband Britain pledge to provide businesses and individuals with universal access to 2Mbps broadband regardless of where they are in the UK.
