The rapid growth of the Android operating system could lead to an increase in VoIP mobile traffic.

Research firm Canalys has revealed that shipments of Android phones have increased 886 per cent in the second quarter of 2010 compared to the same period last year.

Apple recorded the second largest growth in the smartphone market as the Steve Jobs-owned firm saw shipments rise by 61 per cent over the same period.

The success of the two companies, coupled with the rise of Symbian and RIM phones, meant the smartphone sector grew by 64 per cent in the second three months of the year compared to the second quarter of 2009.

The increasing popularity of the Android platform and smart phones in general could result in more people accessing mobile IP telephony solutions.

Pete Cunningham, analyst at Canalys, expressed his belief that sales were increased as large manufacturers such as HTC, Samsung and Sony Ericsson, all used the platform.

"We're really seeing major vendors getting behind the platform," he said.

If Android and VoIP are together taking over the world, why can't I find a Android VoIP client that's worth its salt? In order for this to happen Android needs an integrated VoIP client. Over to you, Google.
