Firms should prioritise VoIP traffic in order to improve call quality, it has been claimed.

Congested networks are often the cause of the majority of IP telephony solutions problems, although it is not always feasible to simply add more capacity to alleviate the issue.

Tom Nolle, writing for searchnetworking.techtarget.com.au, claimed companies should consider managing and prioritising VoIP traffic.

He said: "You may need to prioritize your VoIP traffic. Prioritisation will let the traffic move to the head of the queue at any point where traffic is backed up."

The standard of VoIP solutions could improve as the network will dedicate more data to the technology during conversations.

Businesses should identify the issues with VoIP traffic before applying custom designed rules for prioritising that traffic.

Mr Nolle advised companies to ensure the congested network is the root of the problem by analysing call quality during times of low use.
