VoIP traffic could be set to rise in the US following the announcement that a VoIP provider has expanded its network coverage.

US firm 360networks has confirmed that residents in Sacramento, California will be able to access the technology.

Rick Coma, 360networks senior vice-president, claimed the company will continue its rapid expansion in the future.

He said: "We will continue to invest in our network, so our customers can meet growing demand for VoIP services in rural, suburban and metropolitan markets across the west."

360 Networks uses 17,200 route miles of fibre-optics to deliver IP telephony solutions to its customers.

This technology could help to ensure a higher-quality of calls and a more reliable connection than standard network cables.

The enlarged network will provide IP telephony solutions to 1.4 million people in the greater Sacramento area. Around 70 million people across 17 states can now access VoIP.
