Business VoIP solutions in Dorset could benefit from calls to increase average broadband speeds in the area.

The Dorset Chamber of Commerce & Industry has revealed that 64 per cent of the region's firms require a connection speed of more than 10Mbps and 86 per cent want to achieve that target by 2011.

Should super-fast broadband be deployed across the county, the sound quality and connection reliability of IP telephony solutions could also improve.

Currently, 39 per cent of firms receive speeds of between 1 and 4 Mbps, while 31 per cent can access download rates of between 5 and 8Mbps.

Dr Monica Seeley, of The Digital Dorset Taskforce, underlined the importance of delivering faster broadband in the region.

She said: "If we cannot deliver affordable fast broadband, Dorset risks losing employers and micro-businesses as they look to other locations.

"This will have an impact both on our economy and the calibre of business people who choose to work in Dorset."

Last year, the local council set up the Digital Dorset Taskforce to help implement next-generation broadband in the area.
