VoIP solutions could benefit from the roll out of BT's fibre-optic broadband network.

The telecoms giant is currently trialling its super-fast service in Milton Keynes as part of its £2.5 billion plan to connect 2.5 million users to the network by the end of 2012.

Internet provider Plusnet has reported that one of its customers has registered download speeds of 77Mbps using BT's next-generation broadband infrastructure.

Fast download rates can improve the sound quality of IP telephony solutions as the connection can handle a broader range of voice data.

Dave Tomlinson of Plusnet claimed customers who currently have slow internet connections will significantly benefit.

"Where in the past they may have struggled to watch online video for example they can now watch iPlayer HD with ease and also download files at the same time and have someone else in the household play games or watch another HD stream at the same time," he said.

Plusnet is planning to run further trials of the fibre-optic service over the coming weeks.
