Firms should consider adopting a multi-protocol label switching (MPLS) network before deploying VoIP solutions, it has been claimed.

According to Middle-Eastern business website Zawya.com, companies should plan to use the network as part of their communication strategy.

An MPLS network prioritises certain packets of information, such as voice data, to ensure VoIP sound quality remains consistent during heavy internet use.

The website also claims users should prepare an inventory of all the required VoIP hardware.

Devices such as gateways, routers, media servers and phones will all be needed to introduce IP telephony solutions.

Zawya.com said: "Whichever model and migration approach, the planning goal is to structure your organisation's cable plant design and data centre resources sufficiently for VoIP call processing to all potential users."

New Edge Markets, the communications firm, recently held an online seminar which outlined the benefits of MPLS networks.
