Telefonica has announced the launch of
mobile VoIP solutions in Europe.
The mobile phone operator will roll out the technology following its takeover of
VoIP provider Jajah earlier this year.
Consumers in Germany will be the first to receive the service via Telefonica's subsidiary firm 02 Germany.
Users can assign a local number to five friends with the O2 global friends product, enabling customers the chance to make international calls at local rates.
Trevor Healy, chief executive officer of Jajah, claimed customers will benefit from the new deal.
He said: "Telefonica's global reach, huge customer base and marketing muscle will bring once-niche services to millions of mainstream customers, taking Jajah-powered services to a whole new level."
The partnership highlights the growing trend for mobile operators to embrace
IP telephony solutions.
Telefonica has 54 million mobile customers in Europe.
