VoIP solutions will be boosted by the increasing presence of multimedia hardware, it has been claimed.

Technology website Global Sources has claimed that consumers will be attracted to VoIP phones with multimedia functions, Wi-Fi connectivity and intelligent operating systems.

It said: "The increasing presence of smartphone and mobile application stores provides additional impetus, giving people wider access to VoIP services.

"The merging of the computer, communication and consumer electronics industries is aiding expansion further."

Firms may be tempted by the new advanced operating systems available with IP telephony solutions, which enable users to develop their own platform to customise applications.

VoIP hardware manufacturers in China, including Grandstream, Xiamen and Yealink, are producing more phones with these 'added value' features.

A recent report by Frost & Sullivan revealed that the VoIP and SIP industry has grown significantly in recent years.

In 2009, the number of customers accessing the technology increased by 40.1 per cent compared to 2008.
