A mobile VoIP application has been updated to enable consumers to make video calls over a 3G or Wi-Fi network.

For the first time, iPhone 4 customers using the fring application will be able to enjoy video calling from any 3G hotspot.

iPhone users will also be able to communicate across different mobile platforms including Android and Nokia.

Avi Shechter, fring's co-founder and chief executive officer, expressed his belief that the new application would be widely welcomed by customers.

He said: "We are thrilled to bring iPhone users unrestricted video calling with all their friends and family. We're proud to facilitate this face-to-face mobile communication experience among friends wherever they are and wherever their friends are on smartphones."

The software also benefits from the multi-tasking feature available on the new iPhone operating system – iOS4.

This will enable customers to open up other applications, such as games and music, during a VoIP call.

In my opinion 3G is still to slow to handle video calls.
