VoIP hardware users should install encryption packages to boost call security, it has been claimed.

John Edwards, VoIP expert at voipnews.com, advised customers to use encryption software to prevent eavesdroppers tapping lines.

He said: "You'll want to take action to ensure your VoIP privacy. The best way to accomplish this is with encryption. Encryption can make it make it nearly impossible for someone to snoop on IP telephony calls."

There are several different encryption methods available, including the Zfone package developed by e-mail security expert Phil Zimmermann.

According to Mr Edwards, Zfone is user-friendly and free to install, although both end-users need to have the software in order for calls to become encrypted.

Firms which already have a Virtual Private Network can use the built-in encryption feature to protect VoIP calls, while all users who access the network will benefit from secure communication.

Furthermore, selected VoIP providers have integrated encryption into their own software.
