Mobile VoIP solutions could become more widely used than traditional mobile phone networks, it has been claimed.

Darren Keirle, editor of mobile phone news site mygreatphone.com, expressed his belief that consumers are attracted to the cost savings available with IP telephony solutions.

"The issue is the consumer wants the cheapest prices they can get for the service they require, but they do not care for the incredible costs involved in creating high-speed networks in the first place," he said.

Mr Keirle said the technology could even threaten the future existence of mobile operators as more customers make the switch to VoIP.

"It obviously has massive economical consequences for revenue generation," he added.

US firm Juniper Research recently reported that the number of VoIP minutes carried by 3G or 4G networks is set to rise from 15 billion minutes in 2010 to 470.6 billion in 2015.
