Firms can significantly benefit from introducing VoIP solutions, it has been claimed.

David Clarke, chief executive at BCS, the Chartered Institute of IT, said that the most obvious advantage of implementing the service is the potential cost savings.

BCS use IP telephony solutions as it allows international employees to contact customers and fellow staff as efficiently and cost-effectively as possible, he revealed on thisismoney.co.uk.

Installing the technology is also inexpensive as businesses do not need to invest in a private branch exchange and will therefore save money on cabling.

Furthermore, VoIP solutions allow remote employees to operate as though they were in the office.

Mr Clarke said: "Firms can also have a choice of phone numbers, and for businesses that want to offer round-the-clock customer service, calls can be automatically routed to where staff are on duty."

Other innovations praised by Mr Clarke include the ability to receive voicemail messages as a sound file in an e-mail and its user-friendly interface.
