VoIP traffic could rise following the unprecedented demand for the iPhone 4.

Apple announced that it has sold 1.7 million units of the latest iPhone in just three days – a record figure for the firm's best-selling product.

According to research by Piper Jaffray and AQA, 77 per cent of iPhone 4 customers were upgrading their previous handsets, while the remaining 23 per cent were purchasing their first iPhone.

The number of VoIP service users could increase as more consumers have access to the software on the iPhone.

Steve Jobs, Apple chief executive officer, said: "This is the most successful product launch in Apple's history. Even so, we apologise to those customers who were turned away because we did not have enough supply."

Sales figures could have been even larger but many stores sold out of the handset within hours of its launch.

Last year, one million iPhone 3GS and iPhone 3G units were sold within the first three days of release.
