Residents in East-London will be among the first to access a new fibre-optic broadband service which could improve VoIP solutions.

Newham council will receive the new technology as part of BT's plans to deploy the package to 87 per cent of London's homes and businesses.

The move could improve IP telephony solutions as more voice data can be transferred on the new lines, resulting in improved sound quality.

Duncan Ingram, BT Group London director and head of BT's 2012 team, claimed the next-generation broadband package would be ready for the 2012 Olympic Games.

He said: "Our investment will make Newham residents the first in London to have blanket access to both fibre and advanced copper broadband services well in advance of the London 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games."

Remote employees will also be able to partake in business meetings as videoconferencing call-quality will be significantly improved.
