The overwhelming demand for the new iPhone could lead to an increase in VoIP traffic.

Over 600,000 people have already pre-ordered Apple's latest handset, the iPhone 4, in just two days.

The popularity of the phone could boost VoIP traffic, as more users gain access to mobileIP telephony solutions.

AT&T, the US mobile network who has an exclusive contract for the iPhone, failed to cope with the high number of visitors and its website crashed, while Apple's site also struggled to cope.

"It was the largest number of pre-orders Apple has ever taken in a single day and was far higher than we anticipated, resulting in many order and approval system malfunctions," the Apple statement said.

In 2009, Apple sold one million iPhone 3GS handsets in just three days, while the technology giant also sold two million iPads earlier this year.

The new iPhone will be released in-stores on June 24th, while pre-orders are due to be shipped by July 14th.
