VoIP service users could be able to access an improved level of service following the expansion of fibre-optic broadband in London.

BT has announced plans to connect 87 per cent of homes and businesses in the capital to their super-fast broadband package by Spring 2011.

IP telephony solutions could benefit from the advancement as faster broadband speeds can handle more voice data, and therefore improve call quality.

Ian Livingston, chief executive at BT Group, claimed that the new service will ensure Londoners can easily access the technology in time for the Olympic Games.

He said: "The infrastructure that we are putting in place will allow people to watch the event in high definition and engage with the Games using a range of exciting, interactive services.

"More importantly, the new broadband network will be a lasting legacy, enabling those living and work in London to prosper and the capital's economy to thrive well into the future."

Around two million consumers will be able to access the 40Mbps broadband package following the upgrade to 114 exchanges across the city.

The telecoms giant plans to offer the service to around two-thirds of the UK by 2015.
