A group of US schools have improved efficiency and cut costs following the introduction of VoIP solutions.

Memphis City Schools (MCS) in Tennessee deployed a district-wide VoIP network in April, which included 13,500 telephone and fax extensions, reports thejournal.com.

Following the move, schools have made significant savings on phone bills, while communication between institutions has also been improved.

The new technology benefits from the district's new fibre-optic broadband connection, enabling higher-quality VoIP calls.

Irving Hamer, deputy superintendent of academic technology for MCS, claimed that the move was necessary to improve student performance.

He told the website: "Through this partnership, we have a world-class, best-practice IT foundation with which to launch critical instructional, professional development and operational solutions."

MCS is the 23rd largest district in America, with more than 105,000 students and 6,000 staff.
