VoIP traffic could increase in the UK following the launch of a new broadband deal from Virgin Media.

The firm has announced that all new customers will be able to access 10Mbps broadband for an initial charge of just £5 a month.

VoIP traffic could rise as more people adopt super-fast broadband, while current VoIP hardware users will benefit from a more reliable call connection.

Virgin has confirmed the web-only offer includes unlimited downloads, weekend calls to UK landlines, free internet security and a wireless router.

The monthly charge will rise to the standard rate of £12.50 after three months, while customers will also have to pay £11.99 line rental.

Broadband providers are introducing increasingly competitive deals to attract new customers.

TalkTalk recently launched a 'free broadband for a year' promotion, which offers consumers 24Mbps broadband and a monthly data allowance of 40GB.
