US VoIP solutions helped significantly increase total broadband revenues during 2009, according to new figures.

Point Topic, an American market research firm, has revealed that Consumer Broadband Value Added Services (CBVAS) contributed an extra 37 per cent to overall broadband revenues.

IP telephony solutions provided the biggest proportion of revenue, while it also overtook security as the service earning the most income during 2006.

John Bosnell, senior analyst at Point Topic, said: "The operators and ISPs are starting to increase the proportion of their revenues that they generate selling add on services for broadband and they are doing it successfully at least in revenue terms."

Broadband providers are becoming increasingly reliant on CBVAS, such as VoIP and online music, to boost profits as subscriptions levels start to drop.

The research shows that profits from these services rose from $39.6 billion (£27.1 billion) to $48.9 billion (£34.2 billion) in 2009, an increase of 30 per cent.
