A US telecommunications firm has seen a significant increase in VoIP traffic over the past year.

Verizon Global Wholesale has revealed that its customers used 200 per cent more VoIP minutes in 2009 compared to the previous year.

Mike Millegan, president of Verizon Global Wholesale, was especially pleased that the company had posted such figures on its tenth anniversary.

He said: "Since we launched our VoIP portfolio ten years ago, we've seen steady growth reflecting customer desire for reliable, cost-effective IP voice services.

"And, as this market grows, we continue to add new VoIP services while enhancing our existing portfolio."

Verizon's success is representative of the growing success of the IP telephony solutions industry, as more businesses and consumers begin to adopt the cost-effective technology.

A recent report by Juniper Research predicted mobile VoIP users will exceed 100 million by 2012.
