VoIP traffic could be set to increase in the UK following the release of the Apple iPad.

The device, which goes on sale from today (May 28th), will offer users the chance to access VoIP solutions by connecting to the internet via the built-in Wi-Fi or 3G cards and using a Bluetooth headset to make calls.

The iPad is expected to be hugely popular with British consumers following the unprecedented levels of demand for the product in the US.

Some operators fear this may put a strain on data networks, but Deutsche Telekom's chief technology officer Olivier Baujard told technology website zdnet.co.uk this will not be the case.

Mr Baujard claimed "the fixed internet experience today is being mobilised" due to customer demand, adding that levels of mobile data usage will increase two or threefold "in the years to come".

The Wi-Fi enabled version of the iPad is available for £699, while a basic model will cost £429.
