More rural firms could soon be able to introduce VoIP solutions after claims broadband access for these businesses will be prioritised, it has been revealed.

The new coalition government is set to focus on ensuring all rural firms will be able to access broadband, enabling them to be competitive with their urban counterparts.

As these firms gain access to faster internet connections they will be able to benefit from the advantages of implementing IP telephony solutions, such as more reliable call connection and lower costs.

Caroline Spelman, the secretary of state for the environment, food and rural affairs, is planning to meet internet providers to arrange the deal.

She told the Yorkshire Post: "We will prioritise the roll-out of broadband to rural neighbourhoods, bringing everyone the same benefits and opportunities of digital technology which so many of us already enjoy."

Many rural businesses believe the lack of broadband access severely hampers the firm's growth and hinders opportunities for young people.
