The continued rise in smartphone sales could lead to an increase in VoIP traffic.

Gartner, the technology research firm, found that 54.3 million smartphone handsets were sold in the first quarter of 2010, an increase of 48.7 per cent compared to the same period the previous year

"In the first quarter of 2010, smartphone sales to end users saw their strongest year-on-year increase since 2006," said Carolina Milanesi, Research Vice-President, Gartner.

The growth of the smartphone market could lead to more users adopting mobileVoIP solutions as the hardware can access fast mobile internet connections.

Experts expect the market to continue to grow in 2010 as Apple releases its new operating system which will allow users to access multiple applications simultaneously.

Overall, smartphones accounted for 17.3 per cent of all mobile handset sales in the first quarter of 2010, up from 13.6 per cent in the same period in 2009.
