US iPhone users would prefer to use VoIP solutions rather than traditional mobile networks, according to a new survey.

American VoIP provider Toktumi found that 82 per cent of the firm's iPhone application (Line2) customers would be interested in using IP Telephony solutions as their primary mode of calling.

Peter Sisson, chief executive officer of Toktumi said: "That is an astonishing number considering most of the respondents have only been using Line2 for a few months. I was pleasantly surprised how much people valued the flexibility and features Line2 offers compared to the normal iPhone calling experience."

Many respondents to the survey cited poor mobile phone reception as the main reason they would switch to a VoIP provider.

The US currently has more Wi-Fi hotspots than anywhere else in the world, meaning that users can easily access VoIP solutions where cellular coverage is poor.

iPhone users also claimed they would be attracted by the cost savings offered by VoIP providers, while 16 per cent were keen on gaining a second number for business calls.
