VoIP services could benefit from increased access to super-fast broadband across the UK.

Fibrecity has announced plans to expand its next-generation broadband package into a further five towns, including Halton (Cheshire), Nottingham, Plymouth and York.

The company's network, which is already live in Bournemouth and Dundee, uses sewer ducts to provide100Mbps broadband connections.

Such download rates provide VoIP application users with a more reliable service, meaning there is less chance of a connection cutting out.

Elfed Thomas, chief executive of Fibrecity's parent company i3 Group, said in a statement: "Today marks another significant step forward in our quest to bring open next-generation internet connectivity to homes across the UK."

Fibrecity predicts that, should the full roll out take place, it will have provided one million British homes and businesses with fibre broadband by 2014.

Furthermore, the firm is considering deploying super-fast broadband networks in Belfast, Aberdeen, Ipswich, Bristol and Birmingham.
