VoIP solutions are set to improve following the imminent launch of the first 4G mobile phone.

The HTC Evo 4G handset will be the first US phone to access the expanding Sprint 4G network when it goes on sale next month.

Customers would be able to make higher-quality and more reliable VoIP calls, as the improved technology could handle more users and support greater data transfer.

Sprint chief executive Dan Hesse expressed his belief that the phone's capabilities would only be fully realised once connected to the 4G network.

He said: "HTC EVO 4G is a fantastic 3G device, but when you use it in our growing 4G coverage area, it becomes a multimedia powerhouse."

Meanwhile, a recent test by pcworld.com found that the phone reached download speed of up to 13 Mbps.

Such speeds would make the network a viable alternative to home broadband connections, which offer comparable download rates.
