An increased number of smaller businesses are predicted to employ VoIP solutions this year, it has been revealed.

VoIP service penetration among Small and Medium Businesses (SMB) is predicted to increase by 50 per cent from last year, according to market research firm Infonetics Research.

Robert Poe, editor-in-chief at technology news website VoIP Evolution, expressed his belief that SMBs will implement the technology to benefit from the reduced costs.

He said: "It is partly because businesses are looking to save money on their phone bills, and partly because of the additional 'big company' features they can get with VoIP."

The IP telephony solutions market was badly affected in 2009 by the financial crisis, but it appears the industry is beginning to recover.

The research shows that companies of all sizes, including large enterprises, began to adopt the technology towards the end of the year, significantly increasing VoIP traffic.
