Open source VoIP solutions service Asterisk provides its users with more support than many of its rivals, according to Telespeak.

The Asterisk training and consultancy company has defended claims that the service does provide official support to customers.

David Duffett, principal consultant at Telespeak, claimed that it is "a myth" that Asterisk offers no assistance as users can benefit from official support from Asterisk suppliers Digium.

Speaking at enterprise communications event UC Expo, he added: "Asterisk probably has better support than virtually anything else out there. Digium, the creators and primary developers of Asterisk, will supply open source Asterisk on a paid for basis - open source Asterisk is officially supported."

Asterisk hardware is also constantly being developed by a huge group of volunteers who provide unofficial support, while continually improving the quality and functionality of the service.

Meanwhile, Panasonic has announced the firm's line of SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) cordless phone systems have been certified by Digium for use with Asterisk.
