VoIP solutions 'as secure as e-mail'

VoIP solutions should be considered as secure as e-mail, according to experts.

There are often security fears following the introduction of any new technology, but concerns surrounding VoIP appear to be unfounded.

Robert Poe, editor-in-chief at industry news website VoIP Evolution, expressed his belief that any potential security breaches can be easily managed with the correct tools.

He added: "There have been no high-profile VoIP security breaches, and I think there is a common sense attitude developing that VoIP security threats are no worse than, say, email security threats."

Less than ten per cent of UK businesses now view security concerns as a barrier to VoIP deployment, according to research from communication service provider Star.

Many companies cite call quality, reliability, and the capabilities of the network as more significant issues than security with regards to adopting the technology.

Furthermore, the majority of firms claimed that they would introduce IP telephony solutions in order to reduce expenditure.
